Seasonal distribution and vertical structure of different types of aerosols in southwest China observed from CALIOP

Different types of aerosols play a crucial role in the climate system according to their vertical distributions and optical-radiative properties. Southwest China (SWC), consisting Sichuan Basin (SCB), Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (YGP) Tibetan (TP), is one most topographically complex regions world also facing varying degrees air pollution problems caused by local, high-intensity anthropogenic emissions trans-regional transport from surrounding areas. However, comprehensive understanding regional three-dimensional (3D) characteristics aerosol distribution evolution over SWC has not be achieved yet. Here, seasonal structures four aerosols, including dust, polluted continental/smoke, dust elevated smoke, were detected using quality controlled CALIPSO Level 2 nighttime profile product 2007 2016 this study. The loading SCB was higher than that other regions, sources, continental/smoke related contributed aerosols. we found have declined since 2013, which due strict regulatory measures implemented for industry biomass burning agriculture recent years. smoke YGP at an altitude 3 km spring significantly those seasons, while 1–2 autumn winter seasons considered local burning. optical depth (AOD) TP nearly magnitude lower two regions. either or Qaidam Indo-Gangetic could been transported layer as high 6 TP. Additionally, heights highest frequencies AOD all SCB, 0–2 km, 2–4 4–6 respectively. In summer, can rise 8–10 on results study provide observational basis further effects SWC.
